The US Needs to Do More and Better at Home to Make the World Better!

The world is changing real fast. It is changing in almost every sphere. Technology is changing every day, making things much easier. Repression in public and private affairs is yielding to freedom and liberty in many places around the world. The developing world is being revolutionized by the ideals of liberty, freedom ad democratic principles and people are real excited to enjoy freedom, some for the first time in their lives. There is one risky aspect in all this. Developed nations have always been looked up to by the third world as models of excellence in freedom, democracy, liberty, prosperity and perfection. As many nations around the world are changing rapidly, embracing new ideas from the developed world, the latter seems to be resting on their laurels, content with policing the third world affairs. There is not so much change going on, other than technological ones. Slavery which officially died centuries ago, is silently practiced at work, in the privacy of people’s homes, and basically everywhere! Poor workers from developing countries who migrate to these enviable nations undergo dehumanizing conditions in their search for work and at work if they ever get any.

We may not wish to go deep into the kind of conditions poor workers are subjected to but suffice it to say that developed countries need to implement the ideals they so vehemently preach and export to the third world. Then the first world will not be a disappointment to any visitor from anywhere as it will be a reflection of the true ideals of freedom, liberty, respect for human life, free speech and privacy of individuals. That will make workers be good ambassadors and champions of such ideals in the countries they originate from. That can boost understanding, harmony and enhance the cause of peace by reduced hatred and improved good will and trust.

Another aspect we wish to touch on is that which touches on conflict.

As the world becomes better and better, indeed as it gets freer and freer, we expect that the level of mistrust and conflict should reduce, as there is more and more interaction amongst people of diverse cultures, origins, nationalities, and backgrounds, a situation that makes people understand one another. This gives ample opportunities to humans anywhere to dialogue, negotiate and reach compromises in cases of disagreements of any nature. This move can prevent wars which lead to immense loss of human life, destruction of property and infrastructure and civilization. That means wars ideally should be discouraged even when they seem necessary. First, wars kill indiscriminately. Secondly, they cripple people, shatter their hopes and spirits, traumatizing many and causing agony and squalor. Moreover even as individuals rejoice at their victory in war, they do that with mournful faces as they bury the dead and treat the casualties of such a war. The losers also nurse their wounds and loss in a similar if not a worse manner. This situations implants bad memories in all survivors, more especially the young ones who obviously get traumatized all their lives and lose trust in society. Abolition of armed conflict can thus mark a breakthrough in the world’s search for universal liberty, world understanding and peace!

The world always looks to the west for protection, direction and for anything good. Western countries, especially the US, thus should not waste this good will, trust and respect they enjoy from the rest of the world. They should prove true to the principles they stand for and preach. They should protect lives and liberties of individuals. Above all, they should help the world bring an end to neo-slavery, war and conflict. Then there will be no danger to human survival and civilization.

We have over the last few years concentrated on an online campaign for peace, freedom, and elimination of all manner of hatred. The purpose of this article is thus to help provoke thought and debate and action as may be necessary. We do this hoping those who are keen on, and want, good in the world will carry the message to those who have discretionary authority on policy direction anywhere and everywhere. Our hope is that the world keeps improving and taking a direction that does not endanger humanity and civilization!  Every human life matters!  The campaign for sustainable peace continues!
